don dougan sculpture gallery one

Don’s work is comprised of both abstracted and figurative imagery.  The pieces are executed in variety of materials — most often mixed — with stone being a predominate medium.  Other materials used in conjunction with the stone include foundry cast metals, carved and joined wood, cast and fabricated plastics, cold-worked and kiln-formed glass, ceramics, cast and carved hydraulic cements, handcast paper, welded/fabricated metals, gilding, and the ubiquitous found object.

His abstracted imagery is worked into pedestal pieces, large freestanding sculptures, and in wall-mounted reliefs.  The figurative detail series, focusing on details of the human form (most often  lips) are usually presented as wall-mounted reliefs.  The series uses the metaphor of the form for delving into explorations of character and emotionally charged relationships.   The more abstracted works reveal a persuasive sensuality of  material through the tactile subject, while the figurative detail or lip series explores a visceral humor.
